Mohan Thomas This isn't just 'some' jazz album (or musician!) in a sea of many. The compositions are very sophisticated and clever, and not really imitations of anything to my ear. Highly recommended. And as a bonus, there are some REALLY interesting vampy bits to suck you in, if you're anything like me

about

Ever since Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus, it has been well established that colour plays a primordial role in jazz. When talking about his music, Joel Miller often uses terms more commonly associated with painting. The arrangements he presents on this CD are acoustic tapestries in which different instruments dissolve into one another. In short, this is an eclectic album, constructed with precision and skill.

This has led him to be a perennial figure in radio charts and Best Of lists; trumpeter Dave Douglas calls Miller “one of the great pleasures of the Montreal scene.” ... more
